Club Championships – Results for September 2026!

Finals Day got off to an early start, with two matches getting proceedings underway.

First up was the Ladies’ Doubles, featuring Lucy Manico and Chiara Detsiny against Sarah Bignell and Corinna Hutchison. It was a fascinating and competitive match, with Lucy and Chiara eventually taking the title.

Alongside this was the Men’s Plate, featuring Shaun Fishburn and David Bruce.  Another hard-fought contest kept the spectators entertained, with the singles going to a thrilling three-set finish, eventually won by David Bruce.

After all the excitement, it was time to refuel at the BBQ, expertly manned by Richard Awbery and Steve Wright. Numerous burgers and hot dogs were demolished and thoroughly enjoyed — not just by the players and spectators, but also by the children finishing their tennis lessons.

At 1pm, attention turned to the Men’s Doubles, with the exciting partnership of Johnny Calow and Clive Bertram taking on the father and son team of David and Charlie Bruce. Once again, the standard of tennis was excellent and the match provided plenty of entertainment for the growing crowd.  Johnny and Clive were victorious.

In the Mixed Doubles at 2pm, Peter Lincoln and Lucy played Shaun and Chiara.  The match, which was a re-run of the final two years’ ago, included some great rallies and this year it was Peter and Lucy’s turn to lift the trophy!

Lastly came the Men’s Singles Final between Johnny Calow and Clive Bertram.  This was a very competitive match, with Johnny’s consistency winning on the day.  We all enjoyed the serve and flair of Clive and look forward to future matches between these two.

Meanwhile pickleball players had taken to the courts to enjoy a friendly afternoon of pickleball.

Barbara Awbery, who has spent many hours setting up and running pickleball at EVTC, was awarded the Club’s Pocock Cup, which is an annual award for contribution to the Club.  Well done, Barbara.  You are a worthy winner. Georgia (EVTC Chair) presented the Cup after the afternoon pickleball session had finished.

It was a fantastic day of tennis, with plenty of competitive matches, great support from members and, of course, plenty of food and good company!  A huge thank you to everyone who played, umpired, presented the prizes, watched, helped out and contributed to making Finals Day such a successful day for the Club.
