EVTC Finals Day 2025 – Saturday 13th September

EVTC Finals Day

Finals day started with an early match for the Veteran Ladies Doubles partnership of Caroline Luard and Louise Tunbridge playing Charlotte Laycock and Sarah Keating. It was a close match and one that couldn’t be completed so we’ll have to wait a little longer for that result.

Despite the threat of rain all day we only had two short interruptions and we managed to get all the rest of the matches played. The men’s and ladies’ doubles both took place at midday and a good sized audience enjoyed some excellent doubles matchplay. Jonny Calow picked up another doubles title, this time with Clive Bertram, against their perennial opposition, Roger Lawson and Patrick Ryan. Chiara Detsiny and Lucy Manico had a great battle in the Ladies doubles against Laura Reglar and Sarah Bignell and won in three sets.

The afternoon saw five singles matches contested by both the adult and junior sections of the club. Tom Collins picked up the men’s singles title playing a hard fought three set match against Charlie Bruce and Isabelle Weaver defeated reigning singles champion Laura Reglar in a two set match. The Boy’s singles was won by William Deuchar against Huw Kwan and the girls, who battled through a downpour without stopping, saw a win for Olivia Staveley  against Eleonore Mighall. In the men’s singles plate, Tom Hargreaves prevailed over a consistent Philip Swinden in three sets.

At the end of the day, we were entertained by a very enjoyable mixed doubles match between Chiara Detsiny and Shaun Fishburn against newcomer Sarah Bignell and seasoned campaigner Patrick Ryan. The match went to three sets in the gathering gloom which saw spectators raiding the lost property for warm clothes. In the end it was a worthy win for Chiara and Shaun who retained their doubles title.

Also awarded was the Pocock Cup for the Clubs ‘unsung hero’ and this went to McDonald Smith. Mac has been organising and playing in the mixed A and B teams for a number of years as well as organising the singles league. The Club wouldn’t be able to run without people like Mac who put in hours of their own time for the benefit of other members. Earlier in the week Mac also picked up the mixed doubles plate title with Laura Reglar against Carrie Armitage and Grant Franklin.

Thank you to all those who entered the club championships and for making it such an enjoyable competition. Thank you also to all those who came to support on finals day and especially everyone who provided fantastic cakes and helped serve teas and coffees and Di and Tessa for decorating the clubhouse so magnificently.
